This presentation will describe some exploratory research undertaken by NDHA to assess the impact of changes made to primary format tools (namely PRONOM -- the National Archives (UK) format registry, and DROID -- the National Archives (UK) format identification tool).
To undertake this assessment, the NHDA investigated the format type assertions made by different versions of the DROID application, and using different format signature files as periodically released by the National Archives (UK). The NHDA also assessed the impact of using a new technique deployed by DROID which inspects only the first and last portions of a digital file.
Over 27,000 files where investigated, of 31 different 'known' format types, with each file being assessed for format identification by 3 versions of DROID and 8 format signature files. The resulting dataset of over 675,000 file type assertions was explored for consistency. With the primary question asked being 'if presented with an unchanged file, do different versions of DROID, and different format signature files consistently return the same file type assertion?'
This presentation will discuss the findings made by the NDHA, and highlight scenarios where persistent file type assertions are not made, and discuss the implications of this for any institution using the DROID as a file format identification tool.
