In recognition of National Eating Disorder Awareness Week, the Office of Health Promotion at Montclair State University, under the direction of Dr. Marie Cascarano, created Body Acceptance Week, a week-long initiative to promote positive body image on campus, engage students in discussions and exploration of beauty standards, identify disordered eating or excessive exercise habits, and help students connect to resources.

The Mirror Project is an art exhibit, which challenges people to think about how they perceive themselves.

"What do you see when you look in the mirror?”

Students, faculty and staff were asked the question above and responses were funny, sad, shocking and everything in between. Using diverse mediums, these statements were put onto mirrors. When viewing this exhibit, we hope that participants look deep inside themselves and truly reflect on their feelings towards their bodies, as well as look beyond their reflection in the mirror. The Mirror Project was created in 2008 by the Office of Health Promotion at Montclair State University.

This year, MSU Health Promotion and Peer Advocates are pleased to partner with Glenfield Middle School in Montclair. "Did you know that a girl's self esteem peaks at age 9? That's a startling statistic and one that made Glenfield Middle School pleased to join forces with other community agencies to bring The Mirror Project to its seventh graders. The project correlated with Body Acceptance Week in February and was presented in conjunction with Montclair State University, Montclair School District's Health and Wellness Partnership, as well as Glenfield's Guidance Department. Several activities were planned for both male and female students to partake in during the week of February 8 - 12, 2016 culminating with the students creating their own mirrors and displaying them." When they criticize us and tear us down it gives us the impression that if we did things BETTER, pleased them, corrected what they found fault with, did things right in their eyes, that they'd give us the praise and attention we crave. We learn that love and support have to be earned by pleasing them, but they're unpredictable. Their "kindness" is conditional.
